Our K-12 Instructional Program
Yelm Community Schools is committed to providing an education that prepares every student for graduation and success in college, career, and life (Goal 5). To achieve this, our K-12 program aligns with the standards and instructional guidelines published by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), ensuring that all students experience consistent Tier 1 instruction that supports grade-level growth (Goal 2).
This alignment ensures our curriculum is rigorous and relevant. Our teachers work diligently to design programs where students actively participate and take ownership of their academic progress (Goal 4), while receiving academic support tailored to their specific needs (Goal 3).
By grounding our work in OSPI’s standards, we create learning environments that prioritize dignity, accountability, and growth (Goal 7). We ensure that as students move through our schools, they not only meet high expectations but also access opportunities for leadership and creativity (Goal 8) and build meaningful connections where they feel known and valued (Goal 6).
Through this system, supported by positive, student-centered approaches to attendance (Goal 1) and strong partnerships with our families and community (Goals 9-11), we ensure our students graduate ready to thrive in the 21st century.
Curriculum Review and Adoption
The curriculum adoption process in Yelm Community Schools is a structured, comprehensive approach. Guided by state law and school board policy, teachers work in partnership with administrators to review and recommend core curriculum for adoption by the school board. The process is directed by the superintendent or a designee, who identifies relevant curriculums that meet state and local standards for the course. The superintendent or a designee appoints a committee consisting of professional staff to evaluate and recommend instructional materials. The committee includes advisors including administrators and parents to provide additional perspective to the staff members conducting the review. After a thorough review, which may include field testing, the committee submits its recommendations to the school board, which holds final responsibility for the formal adoption of all core instructional materials.
